What makes environmental education great? This is a featured page

Now and in the future students must make difficult decisions that impact the health of the environment, success of our communities, and vitality of our economy. As educators we must provide them the skills they need to face those opportunities and challenges.

Environmental education integrates an understanding of scientific concepts and societal needs and is designed to develop students that are environmentally literate. An environmentally literate person understands the implications of his/her actions, and has the skills to critically think about and make responsible choices. These skills are transferable to every facet of life.

Environmental education happens in our schools and in our communities. Thousands of programs are provided every year to hundreds of thousands of learners. These programs are provided by classroom teachers, businesses, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and interested individuals across Colorado.

...is great because it is the natural way people have always learned...predominantly outdoors and in conjunction with the rest of the living world.

Environmental Education helps to bridge the built with the natural world. EE is where you are. However, with the stewardship component of EE, students can learn to respect and care for the environment. EE provides a "level field" for learning and can be placed at the core of a curriculum. Environmental education can provide a common language among diverse cultures. In sum, EE is great!

Anonymous Bringing Enviromental Literacy into the public school system 0 Jul 1 2009, 11:05 PM EDT by Anonymous

Historically environmental literacy has been taught outside the public school system. So why is it important that environmental literacy is taught in public schools today and in the future? That is the aim of the ELP after all. I am an advocate of bringing environmental lit. into the schools, but am curious a) if others are and b) why others think it is or is not important.
